The 2nd IGNITE Innovation Challenge is designed to empower private sector actors to develop and scale innovative solutions that address critical gaps in food systems and enhance climate resilience. Targeting Ethiopia’s Somali and Tigray regions, the programme supports innovations in agricultural productivity, value addition, post-harvest management, digitalization, and market access.

It offers a platform for local entrepreneurs to showcase, refine, and expand their solutions, while fostering cross-sector collaboration to co-create impactful responses to systemic challenges

Focus Areas

Through the 2nd IGNITE Innovation Challenge, we aim to catalyze transformative solutions that address the food systems challenges in Ethiopia with a focus on Somali and Tigray Regions. Join us in our mission to ignite innovation for a more resilient and prosperous future.

The innovation challenge will focus on innovative solutions that fall within the following domains.

1. Agricultural (crop and livestock) Productivity:

solutions that enhance agricultural yields and production efficiency through innovative practices, sustainable resource use and management, and the adoption of improved agricultural inputs and technologies.

2. Value Addition and Postharvest Management

Solutions that enhance food value chains through agro-processing, food fortification, aflatoxin control, and applications of practices and technologies including enhanced postharvest management. The solutions should contribute to enhancing postharvest handing including storage, processing, marketing and distribution. 

 3. Digitalization and Access to Market

Solutions that leverage digital tools and platforms to streamline supply chains, enhance access to input and output markets, and create new pathways for food producers and consumers to connect with broader markets and finances.

  • DEADLINE10th of July, 2025

    Applications can only be submitted through the relevant online form provided (please click here) and at local WFP and Iceaddis Offices (Applicants can collect forms and drop them off at the mentioned regional offices). The submissions should include a detailed description (through the application form) 
    Selection criteria: 
    1) Innovation: The degree of innovation demonstrated by the proposed solution, including its uniqueness, creativity, anad potential to disrupt existing paradigms.
    2) Impact: The potential impact of the solution in fostering climate-resilient, inclusive, and locally-led sustainable food systems, as well as its contribution to addressing food security challenges within the stated regions.
    3) Feasibility: The feasibility of implementing the proposed solution, including its technical viability, scalability, and sustainability over the long term.
    4) Alignment with Objectives: The alignment of the application with the goals and objectives of the IGNITE Innovation Hub, as well as its ability to contribute to the overall mission of fostering sustainable food systems in Ethiopia.
    5) Local Context: The extent to which the proposal demonstrates a strong understanding of local contexts, cultures, and needs, and its ability to leverage local solutions to address local challenges.

    The applicants can submit their entries in English and Amharic. 
  • Special provisions

    Compliance of submitted projects with these criteria will be verified as far as possible prior to presentation to the selection jury.
